Well, the Wii is made for action, and Wii sports games for kids are available in a wider variety than ever before.  You can find games that are fun for really young children under 8 years old, or for tweens ages 8 to twelve, as well as pre-teens and teens.  All of these games involve moving your body to get the controller to move, and getting involved in the game is the whole motivation behind the Nintendo Wii console.

There's no question that the Nintendo Wii has appealed to more kids, meaning younger kids ages 4-10, than some of the other game consoles. The easy to use controllers and a great base of games developed for this platform has made it loads of fun for children, but also for their parents.  With the addition of the Wii Fit balance board, the games available are even broader. But you don't need a Wii Fit to get a fitness game for kids for the Wii.

Some of the best games for kids under 10 years old are Mario games.  Mario Party 8 was made for younger children, and has any fun "mini games" that requires kids to twirl, shake, move and use their eye-hand coordination for game play.  A great fitness game for younger children is Nickelodeon Fit, with favorite Nick characters like Dora, Diego and others, encouraging kids to bike, jump rope, run and much more.

For ages 8 and up, there's Wii Sports Resort, with basketball, sky diving, jet skiing, canoeing, Frisbee, and much more.  Games like Wii Play are rated E for Everyone, and some are rated E-10, for ages ten and up.  These are usually rated this way for cartoon-type violence (someone gets bopped on the head for example) or for difficulty in play.  Parents can rest easy when they are buying a Mario game for the Wii, that there won't be excessive violence or sexuality, and the kids are having fun while they learn and improve their eye hand coordination to boot.

For tween kids, there are games rated E for Everyone that they will find fun, like Active Life Outdoor Challenge, which comes with a mat to really get activity ramped up.

For teens, some of the most popular games are dancing games. Just Dance series is popular, Just Dance 2 is the latest version, and includes top pop songs, dance competitions and much more fun. There is also the game that started it all, Dance Dance Revolution, with their 8-pad mat and competition features. One Wii games for boys, or some girls too, is EA's NFL Training Camp, where players wear heart rate monitors and run through drills while playing for their favorite team. And Zumba Fitness Wii game will appeal to girls, a great way to get a cardio workout while dancing.

All of these games will get kids' hearts pumping, get them moving, even indoors! Don't let them just sit there bored, when these fitness games can really get them active.

Exercise With Video Games Good For Kids

Many parents object to video games for their children because it might make the couch potatoes, or keep the kids just staring at the screen instead of doing physical activity.  That's really no longer true, with some of the great fitness and activity games now available for kids of all ages.  There are dancing games, exercise games and sports games that your child probably won't even realize is making them move!

The idea of video gaming makes people think of sitting on the couch, but today with the Nintendo Wii and other game consoles where movement is incorporated, kids are off the couch and moving. Wii games like Just Dance 2, Nintendo Wii Sports Resort and others can help kids get into a better mindset about getting active.

For parents of overweight children, it's helpful to know that some recent studies have shown that overweight kids could benefit from using some of today's more "active" video games available on the market. Studies of kids ages 10-14 who are overweight found that adding in some active video gaming helped them to avoid gaining weight over the course of six months.

It's not the gaming itself that helps them reduce their weight gain, but more the fact that they begin to get use to activity. Getting outside and doing activity is always the best idea, but for children who enjoy video games, it can help to reinforce the notion of moving their bodies as being healthy for them. It's also a great idea when the weather outside is not cooperating, or as a treat after all the homework is completed.   Some of the best Wii games are designed to get kids moving, for example.

Experts don't want to tell parents to allow more video gaming as a result, but they do agree that it helps to play active games as opposed to sitting down games if the kids have to play at all.

Other tips are to limit "screen time" to just a couple hours or less per day, and to also restrict other electronics and television time. It's good for children when their parents promote activity and health over just using the video game console as a baby sitter.

In testing done on overweight children, those that played sedentary games gained 2-3 pounds, while those who played the more active games showed no weight gain. While this is a small difference, keeping extra weight off is good for growing kids who are overweight. Researchers were quick to say that the change was minimal and they re not recommending adding more video games, but just to use the game time kids currently have to play more active games instead of the sedentary ones.

Having a family lifestyle that is active and healthy overall, and doing activities together, is the best solution for children who are overweight.
