New War Games For Wii – Anything Else?

Nintendo announced there are more games coming for the Wii, but perhaps unfortunately for family and "casual" gamers, much of the focus is on the war and action games segment, where millions of dollars of revenue continue to pour in. When Nintendo focused on release of the Wii, they had many titles like Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros which were fun to play at the time, but development has lagged with the passing of time. Now, the core teen and young adult gamer crowd is looking for war games like Call of Duty Black Ops for Wii and action games like Resident Evil 4.

Nintendo says it wants to build a game console system that satisfies everyone, form the casual gamer to the core teen war gamer - but is that possible? The Wiidoes not have on high definition display, and so the quality of graphics is lower than other game consoles. It doesn't have the robust online experience, which many gamers enjoy playing others online. But when it comes to family games for the Wii, or games for exercise, the Wii does excel. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can come across with a new game console that has the upper end requirements of the serious gaming community. In the mean time, though there are still many games for families, younger kids, individuals, and just party fun for many other players.

Some top titles are the fitness titles, like Zumba Fitness for Wii, and the Jillian Michaels titles. Titles were also released such as NFL Training Camp, meant to appeal to men as well, but that title was not as big a seller as the titles that appeal to women.  Other titles that are fun, as well as fitness are the Just Dance games, including the new release, Just Dance 2.  These are top selling games, and especially fun for more than one player to join in.

Next year Nintendo will be releasing the newer Wii Consolewith its revised controller, called the Wii U.  They are attempting to bring new technology to the forefront, as well as attract back some of the big revenue makers in the gaming world.  Since these releases aren't due until some time in 2012, only time will tell if the Wii becomes the casual game box by default, or has what it takes to compete with the big guns in the serious gaming world.  In the mean time, the Wii remains a great console for anyone with kids, families, older gamers and anyone looking to add some fitness to their lifestyle!

Popular Wii Price Cuts Starting May 15

Beginning May 15th, Nintendo dropped the suggested retail price of the popular Wii console to just $149.99.  This price drop includes both the white and black Wii console bundles, and comes with the top selling game, Mario Kart plus a Wii Wheel accessory.  This game replaces the earlier sports games, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort games, which had been included with the base console.

In addition, and also on May 15, Nintendo released the new Nintendo Selects series of Wii games. In "Greatest Hits" fashion, Nintendo Selects are top selling games that millions of gamers have enjoyed, and are listed for a suggested retail price of $19.99 each. These games are as follows: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess [a new Zelda Skyward Sword game is due to be released in 2011], Animal Crossing: City FolkMario Super Sluggers and Wii Sports [Wii Sports Resort is the newer version of this game]This is also the first time that the Wii Sports game is being soled separately from the Wii console.

It's clear that Nintendo is seeking to push its game console into even more homes, those that might have been unable or unwilling to afford the previous price of $200 for the console or $29-49 for games.  With a new game console, the Wii 2, being revealed in June 2011, Nintendo clearly wants to get product out the door and extend its already huge fan base.

The Mario Kart Wii game which is now included with the Wii console bundle allows players to enjoy cartoon go-kart racing with Mario and all of your favorite Mushroom Kingdom friends right out of the box.  This is simimlar to the early 1990's when Nintendo included the original Mario Kart game along with the Super Nintendo consoles.  In today's bundle package, the Wii Remote Plus controller, nunchuk accessory and Wii Wheel are included, and will match the hardware colors, whether black or white.

Mario Games

Nintendo built an empire  on a single little guy in a painter's cap - Mario.  Mario games have been a huge hit since the release of the NES system decades ago, and it's only grown from there.  Mario and his friend Donkey Kong are together responsible for hours and hours of video game fun for young and old gamers alike.

Today, there are dozens of great Mario games for kids to play.  Recently, Nintendo released a new version of its original hit game, Super Mario Bros, but for the Wii it was released as New Super Mario Bros.  This is the game that started it all, with Mario in two dimensions climbing ladders and defeating those who would stop him.  Moving blocks, tilting platforms and a huge number of other obstacles, not to mention the Goombas, Koopas and Donkey Kong characters!

For the youngest set, there are also the Mario Party games - Mario Party 8 was developed for the Wii, and consists of lots of mini games where up to four players can compete.  This was last released in 2007, with later version created for the Nintendo DS.  This game with all its funny characters and hilarious challenges is a hoot to play with your 5 year old!

For slightly older kids, there's Mario Kart for Wii. This game  is now included with the Wii console which is on sale for $150.  Mario Kart has all the Mushroom Kingdom characters racing each other on multiple obstacle courses, and again up to four players can join in. Another great game for kids between 8 and 12 is Mario Galaxy and its sequel, Mario Galaxy 2.  In these games, Mario travels through space to a variety of different worlds, where the challenges and bosses get harder and harder to defeat. There are dragons and pirates, mazes and flying cannonballs - may be difficult  for very young kids, but challenging for tweens (and plenty of adults too!).

For older kids, there are the battle games, Smash Bros Melee and Smash Bros Brawl. These aren't specifically Mario games, since many Nintendo characters join in, including Kirby, Link, Ganondorf, Ness, and others. Battle up to four friends or the computer, in team battle or one on one, in a variety of truly imaginative locations built on the locations from various Nintendo games, or even scenarios you invent yourself.
